Photography info - Manipulate DOF for better subject focus
In Photography, sometimes, it is not such a good idea to have every details within the frame to be in sharp focus. To draw attention to a main subject, we can choose to selectively defocus other elements of the composition.
To do so, the photographer can set the camera parameter to a narrow or shallow Depth-of-field (DOF). A shallow DOF corresponds to smaller F-stop number. The smaller the F-stop number the larger the aperture size. The smaller the F-stop, the more defused objects that are not within the focal length will appear. This technique is especially useful for close-up or macro photography.
If your camera features aperture-priority, it is a good idea to switch to this mode. This can ensure that the camera automatically select the appropriate shutter speed for the designated aperture size.

What is interesting is that modern 3D computer software can simulate the DOF effect as well. This include 3D programs such as 3D Studio Max, Carrara, Cinema 4D and Maya. If you want to know more about 3D digital graphics, this website talks about them as well.
