HDRI is getting quite popular in Photography. In the field of 3D graphics, HDR technology is also used to enhance renderings. There are HDR maps that can be used to provide a kind of global illumination.

Photomatix Basic is a very useful freeware for HDRI. It allows one to create High Dynamic Range Images from 2 photos of different exposures. It can intelligently tone map HDR images. Tone mapping is a technique applied to digital images so that tonal information can corresponds more closely to the way our eye perceives brightness.
