GPU rendering the future?

As we all know, 3D software programs uses the CPU to do calculation for rendering. However, there is a new emerging trend. There are now more 3D rendering programs taking the GPU as a way for generating the rendering.

This can result in much faster rendering time. Even the open source community is jumping on the bandwagon with rendering engines such as Cycles and Smalllux GPU. By the way, Cycles is going to be a new rendering system for the popular 3D program Blender.

In the commercial front, there are GPU renderers such as V-ray, Octane Renderer, Indigo and Machstudio Pro. Most of the GPU cards supports either one of the following: CUDA, DirectX, Open CL. Many of these programs need supported graphic cards from Nvidia or ATI. For example, certain Nvidia cards supports CUDA. Therefore, one will need a fairly graphic powerful workstation to benefit from these latest technology.

The 3D field and industry is clearly moving towards a GPU rendering based solution. By the way, as of this current writing Machstudio Pro 2 is available as a free download.

Not only 3D graphic programs are jumping on the GPU bandwagon. Other applications such as Video and graphic editors are increasingly supporting GPU as well.

HDR light with Blender

This video tutorial  illustrates HDR lighting with Blender 2.5. It took advantage of the environmental light feature in the new version.

Enjoy.

Movie Plus 4 with Blender Avi -jpeg

There seems to be a problem that I have encountered when using Serif Movie plus 4 for editing avi-jpeg animations made with Blender 3D animation program. The bottom part of the exported movie from Movie plus 4 will have insightly flickers.

What was found is that using Virtualdub as a intermediate file exporter seems to solve the problem.

To solve the flickering problem:

1. Open the Blender-created avi-jpeg file in Virtualdub.

2. Save the file as AVI (in Virtualdub)

3. Use the re-saved avi when using Movie Plus 4.

Hope that this information may be of use to someone.

Learning 3D modeling and animation

Learn 3D modeling and animation can be quite expensive. This is not only in terms of time, but in terms of cost as well. This is because high end 3D software costs thousand of dollars. Unless, you opt for open source solution. The most powerful open source solution for 3D graphic is Blender 3D. Although open sourced, Blender is really professional grade application.

There are more and more 3D training being conducted using Blender. Beside Western countries, more Asian countries are beginning to take a serious consideration at Blender with 3D training in Singapore, China, etc.

Beside Blender, the other powerful free 3D suite is Truespace. Unfortunately, Truespace is no longer in development. However, this software is freely available for download over the internet. There is even a plugin developed for it that allows Yafaray external renderer to be used with it.
